Paper Abstract:      This paper reports the development of an application that runs on a mobile device and assists users to follow a daily diet plan as prescribed by a dietician. No assumptions are made on the diet plan or food program adopted by the dietician or on the server side application. From a proof of concept, the work developed will evolve towards a telemedicine solution. First of all, a study was conducted on the types of available mobile devices, their respective operating systems and the developing tools to be used with the applications aimed to those devices. After choosing the device type, its relative operating system and developing tools, the application’s requisites, analysis and design were defined. Then, the application’s interface was defined and developed, creating forms for data entry, query, editing and removal. Subsequently, functions were implemented to establish communication between the mobile device and the web server. The functions of the newly created interface were implemented using a database system and XML documents. Finally, the security mechanisms to be used with the application were studied and implemented and the application package was completed with the final distribution format.
