Paper Abstract:      This paper is concerned with identifying complex situations that arise in e-markets such as fraud occurrences and security intrusions. Due to many challenges related to the size and complexity of the data generated by e-markets, most existing commercial systems show limitations when addressing the needs of such applications. In this paper, we apply event concepts to model the behaviour of e-markets and propose to conduct the analysis through an Event Processing System (EPS). A comparison between different types of EPS is carried out in order to explore their suitability in detecting event patterns. The paper analyses the data model used in e-markets and proposes an EPS architecture that integrates a number of existing EPSs to process event patterns. A case study in financial market surveillance, involving two existing EPSs - SMARTS and Coral8, is used to evaluate the proposed approach.
