Paper Abstract:      For CSCL -systems, the support of interaction is mainly focused on communication since directly experiencing a situation and learning by observing are mostly inapplicable. The CSCL-system KOLUMBUS follows the requirements of the context-oriented communication model and uses a special concept of annotations to support communication. Experiences with an initial version of KOLUMBUS led to further improvements. This paper shortly describes the main idea of communication support in form of annotations and the empirically found improvements. It then presents the experiences with the redesign that were gathered in three different settings. From these findings general guidelines for the design of asynchronous communication support for collaborative learning are derived.
