Paper Abstract:      Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is becoming an important requirement for businesses world over. Though CSR is not new in India as it has been traditionally linked with spirituality, today CSR activities by Indian companies are said to be in a nascent stage. This study is an exploratory study to understand the CSR activities undertaken by companies in India. Responses of 102 companies spread across different sectors were collected to understand, what initiates CSR, the extent of funds allocated, the type of CSR activities and the monitoring mechanism adopted by companies in India. The study finds that the CSR activities in India are mainly ad-hoc without any proper planning, monitoring and reporting mechanism. The study identifies a need to develop proper guidelines for CSR in India. On a positive note this provides scope for channelizing the CSR activities in India towards a desired goal.
