Paper Abstract:      Even though the term auction tends to bring to mind the classic situation with a seller offering a single item to the highest bidder the current understanding of auctions in electronic business include a wide variety of negotiation mechanisms. Electronic auctions are systems that are exactly defined by the rules that govern bidding, quoting, and clearing. Also the architectures of the auctions systems typically reflect these rules. Some of the developed auctions systems architectures originate from workflow systems and contract management systems. In this paper, we present the architecture of the Internet-based auction system that we are developing. It is aimed for online procurement situation where pre-selected suppliers can place sell offers and only the pre-selected procurer can place buy offers. The auction system is based on a workflow engine which executes workflows specified by BPEL4WS.
