Paper Abstract:      The increasing complexities of the hospital scheduling domain makes traditional scheduling techniques employed in hospitals today inadequate. We present a novel agent-based coordinated framework for patient and resource scheduling in hospitals. The objective of this framework is to minimize patient waiting time and to improve resource utilization. This framework simulates the distributed environment in hospitals by representing each resource and patient as an individual agent. Scheduling is done via an auction process that uses a dual-level decision making scheme. The resource agent auctions its timeslots and makes resource-level decision for bid selection, evaluation and price adjustment. The patient agents bid for a combination of resources and makes patient-level decisions to choose the resource that minimizes its waiting time. In case of emergencies or unforeseen circumstances, rescheduling is opted. The distinctive feature of our framework is that it captures exclusively the dynamics of hospital scheduling. It also produces an optimal schedule when compare to traditional scheduling techniques. A fault-tolerant and robust system is produced that is capable of handling disruptions.
