Paper Abstract:
|
The paper examines Twitter use surrounding four national academic conferences in the United States. By examining tweets submitted to the conference hashtag immediately before, during, and after the conferences, I focus on whether and what type of a professional discourse occurs among participants, who may or may not be in attendance at the actual conference. Findings show that overall levels of interaction are brief and shallow, but tweets nonetheless promote engagement among participants, support existing social networks, help non-attendees feel connected to and learn from the conference, and disseminate conference-related information (particularly via links to web sites) to a potentially wide audience. |
