Paper Abstract:
|
This paper is premised on the idea that learners are mobile. That is, learners traverse varied learning contexts; hence
learning is not confined to particular spaces or time. To this point, learners should have ubiquitous access to learning
resources and social support. However, in a contact university, academic support from instructors and tutors fades as
learners move away from formal laboratories and classes. The mobile learners alternative is then to seek support from a
peer, who shares a background. Learners in South African higher education institutions come from very diverse cultural
and academic background. Thus, the provision of personalized academic support sensitive to the learners context and
background remains one of the challenges facing these institutions. Provision of personalized support demands a Webbased
mobile learning environment system capable of recognizing and building upon the learners diverse strength, social
presence, ability and needs, in order to foster engaged independent, ubiquitous and collaborative learning. Informed by
an empirical study, this paper conceptualizes a context-aware web-based learning environment. The proposed ubiquitous
learning environment system is envisaged to conform to the learners needs through its context awareness and presence
mechanism. |
