Paper Abstract:      The volume of digital information available in textual format has increased considerably and this trend is likely to continue in the foreseeable future due to the popularity of digital books, magazines, newspapers etc. One of the key aspects regarding online material is the possibility to scan though the main parts of a text. In this way, the reader can verify whether a document is relevant to his/her interests without having to go through the entire text. Automatic summarization provides ways to achieve such goal. In this aspect, choosing the right tools to provide a timely response with a reasonable accuracy is highly desirable. This work presents a number of summarization techniques tailored for Portuguese language. To assess the quality of the summaries, three similarity measure methods have been used. The results show that the proposed techniques attained better performance than other prominent solutions.
