Paper Abstract:      In many countries, the newspaper industry is being challenged both by the emergence of new electronic news delivery platforms and by new social developments. This dual threat may well involve elements of creative destruction, and thus a potential reconfiguration of the industry and of journalism as a profession. Both trends are a threat to the stability and long-held traditions of the industry, but also pave the way for entirely new opportunities. At the same time, however, there seems to be reluctance in the industry to reconsider and change existing business models. In this paper, we discuss recent developments in the newspaper industry and use new institutional theory to explain the prevailing business-as-usual mind-set in the industry. Business model theory is then used to argue for new value propositions and combinations of revenue streams that are needed to ensure the industry’s survival and sustainability. The paper closes with a brief discussion of key implications and avenues for future research.
