Paper Abstract:
|
One of the first and most important considerations when investigating a serious sexual offence is to see if the offence can
be linked to others. If a link can be established then there is a very considerable dividend in terms of new evidence and
lines of enquiry to be followed. It also raises what is already a serious incident to a higher level of significance with a
corresponding increase in the resources allotted to investigation of the series of crimes. The problem at the heart of this
endeavour is the definition of a satisfactory classification system for these crimes so that similarity and differentiation are
adequately distinguished. All existing typologies have been advanced by practitioners in law enforcement or
psychologists/psychiatrists and each when examined has been found to be deficient. It is the authors contention that the
problems arise from the inadequacy of crisp set classification in describing complex events like crimes and that fuzzy set
theory offers a powerful tool that can portray crime in a sensitive and perceptive manner that will enhance the search for
associated crimes. |
