Paper Abstract:
|
Nonverbal content of communication in video-mediated medical consultations may be expected to change when
considering cues and signals that are altered due to camera settings, thereby changing perceptions of the doctor which are
important to patient outcomes. This paper aims to determine whether camera settings (focal length and angle) influence
patients perception of a doctor and which camera settings provide optimal patient experience of the medical encounter.
The study uses a survey setup to acquire knowledge on participants perceptions and opinions of a doctor speaking on
video. A total of 360 participants were distributed over 6 conditions, each representing one of three camera angles and
one of two zoom levels (focal lengths). Participants were also asked for their explicit preference in camera angle or zoom
level.
Results suggest that participants perceptions of the doctors personal traits are different for different camera settings.
However, no significant trends can be discovered in these results that would indicate which camera angle and zoom level
would provide optimal experiences of the medical encounter. Explicit decision-making on the preferred camera settings
indicates that participants have a strong preference for the 0° camera angle and a focal length that corresponds with an
image that is maximally zoomed out. |
