Paper Abstract:
|
The authors explore the disintegration and reintegration of online gaming communities via cross-boundary co-playing and the social implications of this phenomenon. Boundary-crossing is an essential factor in distinguishing game cultures from traditional forms of leisure and entertainment. Whereas traditional game players engage in activities and interactions in this place and at this moment, online players from various geographic locations have few physical constraints associated with place while creating new bodies in the form of avatars to engage with others. We investigate the embedded mechanisms of these phenomena and their potential for reshaping adolescent social networks and communities developed via online game participation. |
