Paper Abstract:      An evolution of the CIO profile has been described in the literature for the past 30 years. The change goes from a technical perspective to a strategist role capable of proposing strategies for competitiveness and continuous improvements in all aspects of the business through the design and use of IS/IT architectures and services aligned to the needs of businesses. Despite the great agreement on the characteristics of the current CIO profile required, the persistence of the topic and the many documents reflecting failure in managing IT units that deliver value and support the generation and maintenance of competitive advantages call into question the achievement of the ideal profile. This paper synthesizes the evolution reported in the literature for the CIO profile, and explores ways to achieve the ideal strategist profile. In order to reach conclusions, literature is reviewed and a semi-structured interviews approach is proposed to collect empirical data.
