Paper Abstract:      Technical calculations in modern industry set new level of demands on cluster performance. As well as the more CPU and input/output intensive applications are introduced in to the market, expectations on file systems are increased due to constant need of robustness, scalability and accessibility. Parallel distributed file systems are considered as a solution to these demands because of their abilities to distribute the I/O load over the network and as a result increase cluster performance. In this paper we present an evaluation of the Lustre parallel distributed file system, compared to a network file system and a local file system. We also examine the impact of performance with different network topologies and distributed file systems. Our conclusion contains recommendations and alternatives for usage of Lustre combined with a suitable network setup.
