Paper Abstract:      Lock-in is a major problem for users of online B2C/C2C marketplaces, as proprietary protocols and interfaces prevent competition between marketplaces. Decentralised peer-to-peer networks are often proposed as an option to reduce costs, to avoid dependencies from single providers, and to ensure free access to the marketplace. However, the scale of today’s B2C/C2C marketplaces is often ignored. This paper presents requirements for B2C/C2C online marketplaces and illustrates why large-scale marketplaces cannot be constructed on decentralised P2P networks. An open framework with a generic e-commerce service is proposed instead, and the costs of using such a framework are compared to the fees currently charged by eBay Inc.
