Paper Abstract:      Integrating heterogeneous data sources is a difficult task, particularly with regard to numerous systems that need to share information and cooperate towards a common goal. This is the kind of software environment within Oil & Gas companies. As a result, there is an increasing need for more complex services capable of integrating multiple functionalities and distributed systems. This scenario brings forth the challenge of building new composite services at runtime, which allows a set of services to interact with each other but act as a single entity. We propose an ontology-driven semantic framework to tackle both these issues: interoperability between different data sources and dynamic service composition. The solution is based on a Service Oriented Architecture that combines web services with an ontology. It describes the data domain and business processes. We analyze the proposed solution with two scenarios related to Oil & Gas process plant construction. The decentralized and generalist nature of the software architecture enables its widespread application to other domains, each with its own ontology of business terms and processes.
