Paper Abstract:      The study reported in this paper aimed at investigating the viability and usefulness of Virtual Reality (VR) book applications in resolving some of the very significant barriers involved in accessing and reading Chinese Ancient Books. Ancient books in China, as in other cultures, are difficult to read due to the differences in writing system, in social and historical environment, in the embedded culture and in the capacity to access and retrieve information on these books. This research used a critical literature review and a social media consultation to identify and classify the barriers and to understand current solutions based on traditional books and e-books. Finally, the study compared these solutions with the potential offered by VR technologies. The study concludes with the proposition of a generic model for the development of VR books in the future.
