Paper Abstract:
|
One and a half billion people, all over the world, today carry with them powerful computers in their pockets and purses.
The fact is they often do not realize it, because they call them something else. But today's high-end mobile phones have
the computing power of a mid-1990s personal computer. (Prensky, M. 2005.). According to The Irish Commission for
Communications Regulation the average mobile penetration rate for Europe is 107% and rising. These devices have the
ability to receive, manipulate and transmit various forms of data at any time and almost any location. This gives mobile
phones a strong possibility to become a ubiquitous support for learning and in particular collaborative learning.
This paper outlines proposed research into the field of M Learning, specifically the use of mobile devices as a support to
learning in a third level context. The research proposes to address this from a pedagogical standpoint accessing students
attitudes to and acceptance of Mobile Learning and a technological standpoint accessing the devices available currently
and the identifiable trends. The research will be undertaken primarily within the Institute of Technology Tralee, Ireland. |
