Paper Abstract:
|
The geographic location of popular websites has a direct effect on the nature of bandwidth used to access such websites. In a South African context, bandwidth is often differentiated between local only, and international offerings, with differing pricing structures. This paper highlights some of the benefits of local only bandwidth within the South African context and provides some interesting results on how traffic is routed in South Africa. It further highlights the use of geolocation databases to geographically pinpoint nodes on the Internet and the limitations of doing so. It concludes that local-only bandwidth could be a viable alternative to help drive Internet connectivity costs down in the emerging markets within South Africa. |
