Paper Abstract:      The goal of the present study is to investigate students’ attitudes towards privacy and software piracy. We administered a questionnaire in order to specify students’ behavior and attitudes and conducted semi-structured interviews aimed at identifying students’ rationale. The research was carried out in a Department of Informatics in Greece. Concerning privacy, the study showed that students feel that they are monitored, are unaware of corporate practices, attribute special rights to themselves as programmers and their privacy reasoning is rather situational. With regard to software piracy, the study showed that almost all students created or used illegal software copies, they are not aware of specific punitive sanctions and cite costs and educational needs as causes of their practices. We analyze these results and discuss their instructional implications.
