Paper Abstract:      Direct manipulation user interfaces for supervision in power plants are comprised of a large number of windows, displaying relevant data in order to efficiently and safely operate the plant. Likewise operators need to visualize information, analyze normal and failure situations, process changing data, and finally take these elements to make a decision in a reduced time span. This situation becomes critical for abnormal, failure or infrequent operations within the plant. To deal with the above situation, we propose a model for an adaptive user interface that will improve the plant operation by personalizing displayed information taking into account context information of the power plant, navigation-traces and interaction history between operator and the user interfaces as well as the operator preferences and experience. Our proposed model privileges a novel integration of specific sub-models from Artificial Intelligence, User Modeling and Human-Computer Interaction applying a mixed-initiative interaction in a utility-based approach. A prototype is developed using this model for an assistant operation system for the critical and infrequent tasks presented in the start-up of a power plant. Current results show time reductions for the adaptive version in a simulated scenario for the startup of a power plant.
