Paper Abstract:      The use of agent-based learning management systems (ALMS) for supporting users e.g., teachers and students has its benefits and pitfalls. In ALMS the visible component to users is a virtual instructor (VI). VI itself may be orchestrated from a behavior of agents of a Multi-Agent System (MAS). This paper identifies the benefits of using the VI for teachers as saving time, managing learning resources and increasing the interactions in teaching and supervising their courses. VIs can also help students, when they encounter problems; e.g. recommend actions or distribute questions to teachers available. There are also challenges on the approach, such as the appearance of VI, integration to existing LMSs, and validating the VI’s search, selection, decision-making, and presentation functions. The paper proposes further studies for clarifying the teachers’ and students’ requirements for using VIs; such as user need for personalization.
