Paper Abstract:
|
Fifteen years have passed since we started our first experiences trying to approach the design of our virtual learning
environment to the real needs of our learners. Now that the Open University of Catalonia has a highly appraised online
educational environment it has decided to focus its next design efforts on understanding ways in which the emotional
dimension of the learners can also be taken into account in the design and development of its environment, in order to
enhance learning and engage learners. Its objective is to integrate affective design methods into the current design and
development processes and practices.
Putting together our wide experience and tools developed in user experience, technology and instructional design has led
us to create a set of guidelines for designing engaging e-learning environments. Our first affective studies have
demonstrated that the guidelines can elicit appropriate affective states. In parallel, our team has started to carry out
methodologies to gather information through the use of FACS (Facial Action Coding System) and have generalized some
conclusions we have organized in a tool called Ten heuristics (De Lera, E. and Garrera, M., 2008) where we evaluate
emotional reactions through expressive information. This document presents a summary of our conclusions and aims to
support the first phase of the so called affective loop: the affective design of learning environments. |
