Paper Abstract:
|
An ad-hoc wireless network of inexpensive acoustic sensors is employed for source localization of gunshots. The localization accuracy of the system in open terrain is competitive with that of existing centralized countersniper systems. However, the proposed sensor network-based solution surpasses the traditional approach in urban environments because it can mitigate multi-path effects by utilizing a large number of simultaneous measurements at different locations. In this paper, the overall system architecture, the middleware services including time synchronization and message routing, and the unique sensor fusion algorithm that minimizes multipath effects are described. Finally, an analysis of the experimental data gathered during field trials at a US military facility is given. |
