Paper Abstract:
|
In this paper, we investigate the use of Document Analysis and Recognition (DAR) technologies in South Africa. The need for such a study was brought on by a lack of research regarding the current state of the South African DAR industry. Case studies were conducted during which owners and CEOs of five DAR-related companies were interviewed. Transcriptions and content analysis of these semi-structured interviews allowed prevalent themes to emerge from the data. We have successfully revealed that there is a niche market for DAR in South Africa which appears to be very competitive. We also found that this industry is closely linked to the document imaging industry, and that the companies interviewed share many of the same business practices. Lastly we discovered that the use of paper based information and the need for electronic processing thereof is increasing, securing the future of the industry. |
