Paper Abstract:
|
Environmental monitoring and management have received remarkable attention in recent years, since climate change constitutes a ubiquitous issue that needs to be tackled, as soon as possible. Especially, marine plastic pollution has been widely described as tremendously threatening, considering it has deleterious impacts on the planetary boundaries leading to the jeopardization of various ecosystems and subsequently, human life. To that end, the proposed paper demonstrates an innovative technology system based on Smart Environment Monitoring (SEM), which utilizes advanced technologies, such as Unmanned Vehicles and state-of-the-art sensors, in order to collect optical data (images and videos) about the accumulated debris and monitor, measure and analyze essential environmental parameters about the air, water, and noise pollution of the supervised area. The solution's integrated management methodology is structured according to the information collected by the independent system's components, as well as numerous bins equipped with smart scales that are distributed across the coastal region. Lastly, the data processed by the project's subsystems are employed for the development of a Serious Game, in which all involved beaches compete with each other, aiming at the active participation of both citizens and tourists in cleaning and recycling activities, thus reinforcing marine sustainability. |
