Paper Abstract:
|
Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is a chronic disease that represents a huge health trouble for the population and the Health
Systems. The early diagnosis of this illness, during its asymptomatic stage, is of vital importance to avoid the progression
to blindness.
The project Expert System for Early Automated Detection of DR by Analysis of Digital Retinal Images
(http://www.uhu.es/retinopathy), supported by the Health Ministry of the Andalusian Regional Government (Spain), has
the aim of developing a system, that could be used by non-experts, to discriminate between those patients who require
referral to an ophthalmologist for further investigation and treatment and those who do not present any DR sign,
dynamizing in this way the early detection of the disease. Within this framework, a new automated methodology to locate
the optic disc from digital color images of the retina is presented in this paper. The robustness, high accuracy, as well as
the low computational time achieved make the methodology suitable for use as part of the system under development. |
