Paper Abstract:      Grid Technology is based on the definition of virtual organizations that allow resource sharing for problem solving in distributed environments. In this paper we present a preliminary architecture of a Grid middleware infrastructure to be used in the medical research field. This middleware will have to be implemented on every node of the Grid environment. Our approach is an adaptation of the OGSA standard to a Grid environment for the management, storage and analysis of medical images. It is based on the definition of different modules organized in layers. The most important modules are grouped in three main categories inside the core of the architecture: data management (for data integration and metadata-driven access), process management (with workload distribution of parallelizable processes) and Grid management (for registry and discovering of resources and services). Additionally we define a configuration module to set all the aspects needed to get an optimal performance of each node within the virtual organization.
