Paper Abstract:      The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of Visual Evoked brain Potentials (VEP) for application to a new Brain – Computer Interface (BCI) for disabled people with verbal communication disorders such as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). In this study, an experiment using VEP recordings was carried out in healthy adult subjects. As a stimuli for the VEP, squared figures were displayed on the LCD of a personal computer. Two experimental conditions that were presented in (1) central visual field and (2) peripheral visual field were used. As a result, two different VEP waveforms were obtained between two stimulus conditions. From a comparison of the VEP waveforms, subjective stimulus position in his/her visual field could be discriminated objectively. Utilizing this phenomenon, VEP based BCI for binary decisions can be constructed. Concerns about the feasibility of this method as a BCI were also discussed.
