Paper Abstract:
|
HCI research can be classified as instrumental or analytic. It can be instrumental in the sense that the building of an object is motivated by extrinsic factors such as the desire to produce a product, and is ideally measured by a utility function. It can be analytic in the sense that it allows for understanding an aspect of human-machine interaction or its context more generally. In this paper, the definitions of instrumentality and analysis are elaborated and exemplified through a preliminary sample of published Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) papers to put definitions into context and show the impact of both types of research on the enrichment of the HCI field. The paper sample has covered a wide range of the fundamental research areas in HCI showing how generically instrumentality and analysis classification can be applied to the whole HCI field. The practical and theoretical interaction between both types of research as well as the relationship between their impacts is thoroughly illustrated. |
