Paper Abstract:      “Human-computer interaction is a discipline concerned with the design, evaluation and implementation of interactive computing systems for human use…” (http://sigchi.org/cdg/cdg2.html#2_1 - Accessed 26/01/04). Using techniques from this field, the aim of the research was to develop and evaluate user interfaces for implementation on a portable computer. Given the difficulties that may arise in interpreting handwriting there is always the potential for error that may occur when reading prescriptions. An electronic computer interface would eliminate the need for hand-written prescriptions. We present a pilot study concerning the design and testing of such an electronic computer interface. The information was gathered using systems analysis techniques with task analysis techniques which were then used to breakdown tasks accomplished using paper treatment sheets. Interfaces were designed using Visual Basic 6 and critically evaluated using a pilot survey. Although tasks completed by personnel using the paper treatment sheets were successfully transferred to the finished interfaces, there were advantages and disadvantages to each system, and these are discussed in our presentation.
