Paper Abstract:      Mobile telemedical Microsystems automatically measure and transmit health parameters of patients. These Microsystems are analyzed for their innovation potential and consequences for all involved players and value chain steps. This radical innovation makes very cost-effective, long-term, monitoring of changes in vital parameters of patients possible. This research proposes that disruptions in the value chain linking the patient to the physician will occur. The changes in the chain will be seen as patient and physician are locally divided. New intermediaries will emerge. They focus on the acquisition of medical data and especially on interpretation and pre-screening of medical parameters to support medical staff. Expert systems with medical knowledge will be able to analyze individual health information and identify specific events. Patients accessing their own medical data are more informed, more autonomous partners to physicians and will need to be involved more into therapy. Through the new structure and amount of medical data, new therapies and improved compliance and thereby healing will be the consequence. In the adjacent fitness market, severe changes will be seen by monitoring health parameters. Through mobile health systems and intelligent interaction devices (smart phone, PDA) new services arise. These services may support bonus programs of health insurances, as well as prevention programs and personal health training. The new business models outlined have the potential to take off, but their success depends on interaction of all players involved in the value chain. Legal aspects concerning information policy have to be clarified.
