Paper Abstract:      Traditional surveys are conducted using a “paper and pen” approach. It can be error-prone as it requires the data collected to be re-entered into a database manually for analysis; it is inflexible in that each time a modification is made to a questionnaire, the questionnaire needs to be reprinted and redistributed to the survey conductors. An attractive replacement for the traditional survey system is a mobile electronic system where the data collection is electronic. Such a system eliminates the errors and the burden of data re-entry, and enhances the mobility of information sharing. This paper presents an infrastructure for an electronic survey system employing devices such as Palm handheld, Pocket PC, and telephones. The survey system consists of XML-based questionnaires and survey results, an application component that allows the questionnaires to be converted into a format required by the client devices, and a set of client applications that are essentially the user-interfaces that facilitate survey conduction.
