Paper Abstract:      Most discussion of how to support knowledge transfer is informal. Suggestions for how to improve transfer are not based on a detailed model or understanding of knowledge transfer. There are some high-level models, for instance, comparing knowledge transfer to ordinary markets, but they do not provide sufficient detail to identify specific issues in the process of transferring knowledge. In this paper, we present a low-level model of knowledge transfer which can be used to show how transfer paths are formed between people. A variety of knowledge transfer processes can be represented using the model which has been assessed against empirical data from a diary study. The model has a number of benefits. It brings different knowledge transfer mechanisms into the same framework by showing the detailed steps and transactions. It can be used as a basis for organizations to assess their knowledge transfer practice, and explore alternative transfer strategies. By adding new (unexplored) paths into the model, new mechanisms for knowledge transfer can be suggested. This model can also be used to direct research on specific issues, such as cognitive and social issues affecting transfer.
