Paper Abstract:      In this paper we analyse the specific problems associated with large group collaboration that can occur in a multitude of real world settings. We introduce the concepts of ‘collaborative flow’ and ‘working as one’ as descriptive expressions of successful collaborations. The paper then describes a framework for large-scale collaboration developed from the above analysis and the resultant mechanisms for dealing with the conflict that naturally occurs in large group collaborative activity. We then apply the framework to the types of collaborative activity that occurs within groups of autonomous systems and virtual organizations. Finally, we highlight the framework’s utility as a basis for designing, supporting and managing complex collaborative systems.
