Paper Abstract:
|
For communication to be effective, communicators need to adapt their behavior according to changing circumstances. We examined the dynamics of computer-mediated communication during a collaborative task by breaking the task into steps and looking at adaptive behavior at each step. Our research relies on the notion of communication complexity and show how it affects communicative behavior. A pilot study was used to develop a measure of communication complexity, followed by a laboratory experiment in which 129 pairs of subjects collaborated via a tailored system. We concentrated on one adaptive behavior, namely, contextualization, i.e., adding contextual information to the core message. Contextualization is modeled as an adaptive process governed by costs and benefits. We found that contextualization is sensitive to fluctuations in complexity and requires more and longer communication and therefore increases collaborative effort. Combining the results with those of our previous study, we suggest a two-level framework of analysis: the level of the task and the level of the steps that compose the communication process. At the end, we suggest implications on designing collaborative systems that support adaptive behavior. |
