Paper Abstract:
|
A major gap in previous research in social learning in online communities is the lack of attention to the effects of relationships built among participants on the learning process. Within a thread in an online forum, posts can refer to previous posts. These connections present an opportunity to extend the learning process. We construct a conceptual framework of reference relationships. We propose that four key aspects of reference relationships are associated with the furtherance of the social learning process: engagement, sociality, and advanced levels of learning, and existence and strength of ties between posters. |
