Paper Abstract:
|
Since 2011, Sam Houston State University has been hosting the annual competition event Boosting Engineering Science Technology Robotics. A mini grant was awarded in summer 2014 to support a proposed Mentoring Program for outreaching to rural regions. This Mentoring Program recruited four mentors from local communities to complete a training program. The mentors learned all of the software available to the competition teams, including robotics programming and 3D computer-aided drafting programs. The mentors were assigned to three teams during and after the competition season. A robotics related curriculum will be offered to these teams as a year-long program, either as a course or an after school program. This study found that the mentors shared a positive perception of how the Mentoring Program could promote students in learning Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Moreover, the mentors strongly valued the Robotics Program in offering robotics programming, game competition, marketing strategies, and leadership. |
