The 2nd edition of the Theory and Practice in Modern Computing 2013 (TPMC) International Conference was hosted in Prague, Czech Republic, during 22 to 24 July, 2013 and was co-organised by The University of Economics in Prague (VŠE), Czech Republic. This conference was part of the IADIS Multi Conference on Computer Science and Information Systems 2013, 22 - 26 July.
The Theory and Practice in Modern Computing 2013 provided a forum for research and developments in the field of computing foundations and technology. Modern computing comes not only with efficient concepts and their application, but also it often addresses networking and mobility topics. Hence, the view in TPMC ranged from fundamentals like new or improved algorithms to very recent and modern applications like ubiquitous scenarios or even everyday computing. Complementary to these technically-oriented contents, TPMC also served as a discussion platform about ethics and social impact of those technologies. In its main focus, this scientific conference attracted research reports on efficient application and realization of simple algorithmic methods, new architectures in design and data structures, new and improved communication protocols, and synthesis of known computing concepts and approaches.
The TPMC 2013 received 51 submissions from more than 19 countries. Each submission has been anonymously reviewed by an average of five independent reviewers, to ensure that accepted submissions were of a high standard. Consequently only 7 full papers were published which means an acceptance rate of 14 %. A few more papers were accepted as full papers and short papers.
An extended version of the best papers were selected to be published in the IADIS International Journal on Computer Science and Information Systems (ISSN: 1646-3692) and/or in the IADIS International Journal on WWW/Internet (ISSN: 1645-7641) and also in other selected journals, including journals from Inderscience. Some of the best papers will be eligible to be extended and enhanced as book chapters for inclusion in a book to be published by IGI Global.
Further to the the presentation of full papers and short papers, the conference also included a keynote presentation from an internationally distinguished researcher Prof. Dr. Ajith Abraham, Machine Intelligence Research Labs (MIR Labs) Scientific Network for Innovation and Research Excellence WA, USA.
Keynote presentation
"EVOLVING SMART INFORMATION SYSTEMS" by Prof. Dr. Ajith Abraham Machine Intelligence Research Labs (MIR Labs) Scientific Network for Innovation and Research Excellence WA, USA
Abstract
We are blessed with the sophisticated technological artifacts that are enriching our daily lives and the society. It is believed that the future Internet is going to provide us the framework to integrate, control or operate virtually any device, appliance, monitoring systems, infrastructures etc.
The challenge is to design intelligent machines and networks that could communicate and adapt according to the environment. An in-depth discussion will be made related to the different ways to improve the performance of conventional intelligent systems. Several real world problems will be used to illustrate the need for evolving data structures for knowledge representation and data analysis.
The TPMC Conference 2013 proceedings was published in Book (ISBN: 978-972-8939-94-6) by IADIS Press.
