Paper Abstract:
|
Political participation is largely considered as a central aspect of democratic citizenship. While the extent to which
citizens participate in the democratic process has to be evaluated by each political system, various authors observe a
general trend towards increased implication of individuals in the political process. In our changing society, Information
and Communication Technologies (ICT) and above all the Internet have nurtured hopes for enhancing citizen interest and
involvement in politics. This paper examines the current state of research on e-Participation and e-Democracy, attempting
to answer the question whether technology can create new opportunities for increased citizen participation in e-society
and the shape these new practices may take. ICT are certainly used for political activities such as retrieval of political
information, political discussions or citizen mobilization. This article discusses the main issues and limits of such
practices, questioning the possible relation(s) between a general change in participatory routines and new forms of citizen
involvement on the Internet. |
