Paper Abstract:
|
Network security and usability are both very important factors in campus Wireless LAN (WLAN) systems. Although
IEEE802.1X-based user authentication is very useful for WLAN roaming, it imposes some security threats on the local
area networks at visited organizations unless another countermeasure such as Virtual Private Network (VPN) is used
together. Some incompatibility and usability issues still exist in the current 1X systems and they bother users. In order to
realize a better campus WLAN service, we have developed a secure and user-friendly WLAN roaming system using
VPN-based user authentication, on-demand gateway control, and a distributed access control list database. The system is
scalable and can be used as a worldwide campus network roaming system. |
